Scar Revision
Scars can be unsightly for many reasons (e.g. due to there initial treatment or lack there of, location, orientation, thickness, contour, colour, etc.), or they may be causing a functional problem (e.g. repeatedly cracking and bleeding or preventing free movement of adjacent structures, etc.). There is no way to “get rid” of a scar, there are however several ways to improve many scars.
The first step is for Mr Masters to accurately determine the reason for a scar to be unsightly or posing a functional problem. Depending on the cause the treatment may include;
- Excising the scar and carefully re-suturing it.
- Rearranging the adjacent skin to change the direction of the scar so that it is less obvious. This is called a Z-plasty.
- Excising the scar and “breaking the line of the scar” using small W-shaped zigzags.
- Excising the scar and replacing it with a flap of tissue from elsewhere or a skin graft.
- Post-operative pressure therapy, steroid injections, silicone sheeting, etc.
As each scar and its causes are unique the best next step is to schedule a consultation to have your scar examined and a treatment plan devised.
Dr Masters is unable to provide cost estimates until he has seen the scar in person.
